Helichrysum petiolare, commonly known as Silver Bush or Licorice Plant, is a hardy and fast-growing sprawling shrub that brings a soft, luminous quality to any garden with its velvety, heart-shaped grey and silver foliage. In summer, masses of small cream flowers emerge above the foliage, adding a delicate seasonal accent to its already striking appearance. Growing to approximately 60cm tall and spreading to 1.5m wide, it is a superb choice for adding contrast, texture, and year-round interest to rockeries, borders, and garden beds.
Exceptionally adaptable, Silver Bush thrives in full sun, semi shade, and even full shade, and tolerates a wide range of positions from coastal gardens to shady spots under trees. It has low water requirements once established and is generally trouble-free when it comes to pests and diseases. Feed annually with a slow-release fertiliser and prune occasionally to keep it tidy and encourage fresh silvery growth.
