Description

When the rest of the garden is winding down for winter, Erica melanthera Ruby Shepherd puts on a show. This compact, upright evergreen shrub is smothered in brilliant clusters of deep pink flowers throughout autumn and winter, exactly when garden colour is hardest to come by. The soft, needle like foliage gives it a fine, delicate texture that contrasts beautifully with the vivid blooms, and the whole plant has a tidy, well behaved habit that suits both formal and relaxed garden styles.

Growing to around 90cm tall, Ruby Shepherd is a versatile performer. Mass plant it for a bold seasonal display, tuck it into a border for year round structure, grow it in a container on a balcony or courtyard, or cut a few stems to bring that pop of pink indoors. It handles moderate drought, frost and wind once established, and asks very little in return, just good drainage, an annual feed and a layer of mulch.

Key Features:

  • Produces brilliant clusters of deep pink flowers throughout autumn and winter, bringing colour to the garden when it is needed most.
  • Compact and upright in habit, growing to around 90cm tall and wide, making it easy to fit into borders, pots and garden beds without taking over.
  • Thrives in full sun with low water needs, making it an excellent choice for water wise and low maintenance gardens.
  • Tolerates moderate drought, frost and wind once established, giving it good resilience across a range of garden conditions.
  • Wonderfully versatile - use it for mass planting, as a feature shrub, in a rockery or container, or cut stems to enjoy the flowers indoors.
