Key Features:

• Soil: Well-drained soils are essential. Proteas will not tolerate waterlogged or clay-heavy soils. In Melbourne's clay areas, plant on a raised mound or in a raised bed with sandy, free-draining mix. Slightly acidic to neutral pH preferred.
• Light: Full sun. Proteas need maximum sun exposure to flower well. Avoid shaded or partially shaded positions as this reduces flowering and can weaken the plant over time.
• Watering: Water regularly during establishment, particularly through Melbourne's first two dry summers. Once established, water only during extended dry spells. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure in Proteas.
• Fertiliser: Use only a low phosphorus slow-release fertiliser formulated for Proteaceae, such as a native plant fertiliser. Never use standard garden fertilisers, blood and bone, or anything high in phosphorus as this is toxic to Proteas and can be fatal.
• Maintenance: Low. Prune lightly after flowering in late Winter to early Spring to encourage bushy new growth and maintain shape. Remove spent flower heads to tidy the plant. Avoid cutting back into old wood. Mulch well with a coarse organic mulch, keeping it clear of the stem.
• Flowering: Flowers in Winter with soft, creamy white blooms. Flowering season is one of the key highlights of this variety, providing colour and interest in the garden when most other plants are dormant. Flowers are excellent for cutting and last well in a vase.

The single most important rule with Proteas in Melbourne is drainage. If your soil holds water after rain, do not plant directly into the ground, build a raised mound or bed at least 30cm above the surrounding soil level. Combine this with a low phosphorus native fertiliser and you will have a thriving, flowering Protea for decades. Avoid the temptation to feed with standard fertilisers, even once - phosphorus toxicity is irreversible.
