Description

Echium candicans, the Pride of Madeira, is one of the most spectacular large flowering shrubs available for Australian gardens. Through spring and summer it produces an extraordinary display of large, cone-shaped flower spikes in vivid blue-purple, rising dramatically above the mounding grey-green foliage in a way that commands attention from across the garden. The flower spikes are densely packed with small tubular blooms that attract bees and other pollinators in large numbers, creating a plant that is as ecologically valuable as it is visually stunning.

Growing to approximately 2m tall and 2m wide with a rounded, upright, shrub-like habit, Pride of Madeira is a fast-establishing large shrub that makes an immediate impact in the garden. The long, grey-green leaves have a distinctive rough texture that adds tactile interest to the foliage display, and the overall mounding form is attractive year-round even when not in flower. It performs best in a full sun position in well-drained soil and is highly drought and wind tolerant once established, making it one of the best large flowering shrubs available for coastal, exposed, and low water garden situations.

An annual slow-release fertiliser is all it needs to maintain vigorous growth and a generous flower display. Generally trouble free and very easy to grow, Pride of Madeira is a plant that rewards with very little in return. Whether used as a bold standalone feature, massed for a sweeping coastal planting, or positioned to anchor a large border, it delivers one of the most dramatic spring and summer flowering displays available in the Australian garden palette.
