Malus domestica 'Gala' is one of the world's most popular and widely grown apple varieties, and for good reason. In spring, this handsome deciduous tree is covered in a beautiful display of pinkish white blossom before producing an abundant crop of large, sweet, yellowy green and red striped fruit that matures early to mid-season. The flesh is crisp, juicy, and creamy yellow in colour delicious eaten fresh or used in desserts, and with excellent storage life of up to six months.

A reliable and rewarding fruiting tree for cool climate gardens, 'Gala' grows to approximately 4m in height with a rounded, upright form that suits a wide range of garden sizes. It is also available in a dwarf form for smaller gardens, raised beds, or container growing. Highly frost hardy and drought tolerant once established, it is one of the most adaptable apple varieties available for Australian home gardens.

For best fruit production, cross-pollination is recommended. Suitable pollinators include Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Pink Lady, Red Fuji, and Lady Williams.

Key Features:

• Soil: Highly adaptable tolerates clay, loam, and sandy soils. Good drainage is preferred but 'Gala' is more forgiving of variable soil conditions than many other fruit trees. Avoid permanently waterlogged soils which can cause root rot and reduce fruit production.
• Light: Full sun is essential for best fruit production. A position with at least 6-8 hours of direct sun per day will produce the most abundant and flavoursome crop. Avoid shaded or partially shaded positions which will significantly reduce fruiting.
• Watering: Low water needs once established, with high drought tolerance. However, consistent moisture during fruit development (from flowering through to harvest) is important for producing large, juicy fruit. Water deeply and regularly during dry periods in spring and summer. Reduce watering after harvest and through winter dormancy.
• Fertiliser: Apply an annual slow-release fertiliser in late winter or early spring just before bud burst. A balanced fertiliser formulated for fruit trees is ideal. Avoid over-fertilising with high-nitrogen products which can promote excessive leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.
• Maintenance: Medium maintenance. Prune annually during winter dormancy to maintain an open, well-structured canopy that allows good light penetration and air circulation — this is key to maximising fruit production and reducing disease pressure. Mulch well around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor for aphids, black spot, borers, caterpillars, fruit fly, and mites, and treat promptly as needed.

For the best fruit size, flavour, and crop load, thin the fruit in late spring after the natural fruit drop remove excess fruitlets so that remaining apples are spaced approximately 15-20cm apart on each branch. This concentrates the tree's energy into fewer, larger, better-quality fruit rather than a large number of small ones. Thinning also reduces the risk of biennial bearing, where the tree produces a heavy crop one year and little to nothing the next.
