Description

Aulax cancellata 'Bronze Haze' is one of those rare plants that commands attention in every season. Through autumn and into winter the foliage deepens to a spectacular rich bronze, creating a warm, dramatic presence in the garden at a time when most plants are retreating. Then, as the seasons turn, soft yellow feathery flowers emerge through spring and summer, adding a delicate, airy quality that contrasts beautifully with the dense, evergreen structure of the plant.

A member of the Proteaceae family, 'Bronze Haze' shares the hallmark toughness of its relatives. It is highly drought tolerant once established, handles high winds with ease, and thrives in the free-draining loam and sandy soils common in coastal and low-rainfall gardens. Slow growing and naturally tidy, it reaches 1 to 2m in height and width, making it an excellent choice for hedging, screening, and mixed borders where a low-maintenance, long-lived shrub is needed.

Like all Proteaceae, 'Bronze Haze' has one non-negotiable requirement: a low phosphorus fertiliser. Standard fertilisers high in phosphorus can be fatal to plants in this family, so always use a formulation specifically designed for natives or Proteaceae. Beyond that, give it full sun, excellent drainage, and occasional moisture during dry periods, and it will reward you with years of striking seasonal colour and virtually no fuss.
