Eucalyptus latens 'Moon Lagoon', commonly known as the Narrow Leaved Red Mallee or Fine Leaved Mallee, is a drought tolerant Australian native that delivers year round interest with striking red buds that persist for up to six months and attractive grey juvenile foliage.
This compact mallee grows into an attractive small tree with a dense, upright habit, reaching 2-4m in height and 1-2m in width. Its fine, grey-green foliage is a standout feature, and the long lasting red buds make it a favourite for cut flower arrangements. Growing & Care Guide
- Soil: Grows in most well-drained soil types. Not fussy, tolerates a wide range of conditions provided drainage is good.
- Light: Full sun. Plant in an open, sunny position for best growth and flowering.
- Watering: Low water needs once established. Keep moist during dry periods, particularly in the first season after planting.
- Fertiliser: Apply a low phosphorus slow release fertiliser in spring. Avoid high phosphorus fertilisers, which can be harmful to native plants. Supplement with occasional liquid feeding during the growing season.
- Maintenance: Low maintenance. Mulch well around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Generally trouble free, though monitor for Myrtle Rust.
- Flowering: Flowers are insignificant in colour but the red buds are the showstopper displayed for up to 6 months. No notable fragrance.
