Canary Islands Dragon Tree - Dracaena draco

Dracaena draco, the iconic Canary Islands Dragon Tree, is one of the most architecturally striking trees you can grow in an Australian garden. With its thick, sculptural trunk, wide-branching canopy, and dramatic rosettes of blue-green sword-like foliage that are surprisingly soft to the touch, this is a plant that commands attention and sparks conversation wherever it grows.

Dragon Trees are living legends, specimens in the wild are known to live for over 400 years, making this one of the most enduring plants on the planet. The name 'Dragon's Blood Tree' comes from the deep reddish resin that oozes from wounds in the bark, historically prized and used to varnish fine violins. Key Features:

• Soil: Requires excellent drainage. Thrives in sandy, rocky, or well-drained soils. Will not tolerate waterlogged or heavy clay conditions, as good drainage is essential for long-term health.
• Light: Performs best in full sun, which encourages the most compact and structured growth habit. Will tolerate semi shade but may develop a slightly more open form. Avoid deep shade.
• Watering: Water regularly during the first 1-2 seasons to establish a strong root system. Once established, Dracaena draco is highly drought tolerant and requires very little supplemental watering. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline, so less is more.
• Fertiliser: Apply an annual slow release fertiliser in spring. A low-phosphorus native or general purpose slow release formula is ideal. Avoid over-fertilising, which can promote soft, weak growth inconsistent with its naturally slow, sturdy habit.
• Maintenance: Extremely low maintenance. No pruning is required as the natural branching structure that develops with age is a key part of its architectural appeal. Remove any dead or damaged leaves from the base of rosettes if desired. Mulch around the base during establishment to retain moisture.
• Flowering: Produces small, insignificant white flowers in spring, followed by ornamental orange berries in summer. Flowering typically occurs on mature specimens and adds seasonal colour and wildlife interest without being the primary feature of this plant.

Patience is the key with Dracaena draco. It is a slow grower, but that slow growth is what produces its incredibly dense, durable trunk and long lived structure. Resist the urge to over fertilise or overwater in an attempt to speed up growth, as doing so can cause root rot and soft, weak growth. Buy the largest specimen your budget allows if you want impact sooner, as established plants are significantly more impressive than young ones.
