It is a large, upright evergreen shrub with the kind of quiet elegance that makes a garden feel genuinely well considered. The flowers are medium-sized, pale pink and perfectly formed in a classic formal style, appearing from winter right through to spring and bringing a soft, refined beauty to shaded garden spaces over many months.

Key Features:

• Soil: Loam, sandy or well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. E.G. Waterhouse prefers good drainage and will not tolerate waterlogged conditions, which can cause root rot and a decline in flowering performance.
• Light: Semi shade to full shade. This variety performs best when protected from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the pale pink petals and cause premature browning of the flowers. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal.
• Watering: Medium to moderate water needs. Keep moist during dry periods, particularly through summer and during the plant's first season in the ground. Deep, infrequent watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering and encourages a stronger, more drought-resilient root system.
• Fertiliser: Apply an annual slow-release fertiliser formulated for camellias or acid-loving plants in late winter after flowering has finished. Supplement with a liquid feed during the growing season to support healthy foliage and strong bud development for the following flowering season.
• Maintenance: Low maintenance. Mulch well around the base to retain moisture and keep the root zone cool. Prune lightly after flowering in spring to shape and maintain a dense habit. Check new growth periodically for aphids and scale insects and treat promptly if detected.
• Flowering: Flowers from winter through to spring, with the formal pale pink blooms appearing over an extended period that can last several months in good conditions. Deadhead spent flowers where practical to keep the plant looking tidy and to reduce the risk of fungal issues in wet weather.

E.G. Waterhouse is one of the finest formal flowered Camellias ever bred in Australia, and it responds beautifully to light pruning after flowering to maintain a dense, tidy shape. If you are growing it as a hedge or espalier, start training it early while the plant is young and the stems are still flexible. For cut flowers, pick stems when the buds are just beginning to open and place them in cool water, the formal blooms will last well indoors for up to a week.
