Xanthorrhoea johnsonii, the Johnson's Grass Tree, is a plant unlike any other. Slow growing and extraordinarily long-lived, individual specimens can survive for up to 600 years, making every Grass Tree you plant a genuine heirloom for generations to come. The dramatic blackened trunk formed from centuries of accumulated spent leaf bases and shaped by fire is topped with a spectacular fountain of thin, firm, grass-like leaves that arch outward and downward in a perfect natural crown.
Every specimen is completely unique in shape and form, reflecting its individual history, the fires it has survived, and the conditions it has grown through. No two Grass Trees are alike, which means every plant you bring home is a one-of-a-kind piece of living Australian landscape.
When conditions are right, Xanthorrhoea johnsonii produces one of the most extraordinary flowering events in the plant kingdom. The flower spike emerges from the centre of the crown and can grow at an astonishing rate of up to 3cm per day, ultimately reaching 3m in height. The spike is densely packed with honey-scented cream flowers that attract birds, bees, and other pollinators in abundance. In Melbourne gardens, established Grass Trees will flower when healthy and thriving, rewarding patient gardeners with a truly unforgettable display.
