Jala Avocado Tree - Persea americana 'Jala'

Persea americana 'Jala' is celebrated for producing some of the largest avocado fruit of any variety, earning it the nickname the giant avocado. The fruit features a rough green skin that turns black when ripe, revealing a buttery, creamy yellow flesh inside. Harvest season runs from August through to December, giving you a long and generous window to enjoy the fruit fresh from your own garden.

In Melbourne, Jala avocado performs best in the warmer northern and western suburbs where summers are long and hot, but it adapts well across most of the metropolitan area with the right positioning and care. It appreciates a sheltered, full sun position protected from Melbourne's cold southerly winds, and well-drained sandy or loamy soil. In areas prone to clay soils, planting on a raised mound or in an improved bed will significantly improve performance.

Key Features:

• Soil: Sandy, well-drained soils preferred. In Melbourne's clay-heavy areas, plant in a raised bed or mound with improved drainage to prevent root rot.

• Watering: Water regularly during establishment and through Melbourne's dry summers. Once established, water deeply but infrequently. Avoid overwatering in winter when the tree is less active.
• Fertiliser: Apply a slow-release citrus and fruit tree fertiliser in Spring. Supplement with a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support flowering and fruit development.
• Maintenance: Medium. Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape and encourage new fruiting wood. Mulch well year-round. Monitor for any signs of root stress in poorly drained soils.
• Flowering: Flowers in Spring with small green and yellow blooms. Avocados are self-fertile but fruit set improves significantly with a nearby pollinator tree of a different flowering type (Type A or Type B). Jala is a Type B variety.

Avocados are sensitive to waterlogged roots, which is the most common cause of failure in Melbourne gardens. If your soil is heavy clay, don't just add drainage material to the hole, plant on a raised mound at least 30 to 40cm above the surrounding soil level. This single step makes the biggest difference to long-term tree health and fruit production.
