Description

Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as mondo grass, is a classic evergreen tufting plant widely used for borders, edging, groundcovers and Japanese style landscapes. Its narrow green leaves form dense clumps that slowly spread through underground stolons to create a uniform carpet. This makes it ideal for planting between stepping stones, softening paved areas, edging garden beds or creating low maintenance lawn alternatives in shaded areas. It thrives in a wide range of light levels from full sun to full shade and performs well in most well drained soils.

Key Features:

  • Attractive, fine textured foliage forming dense clumps.
  • Evergreen and tolerant of shade or full sun.
  • Small purple summer flowers followed by black berries.
  • Excellent low maintenance groundcover or border edging.
  • Ideal for Japanese style gardens and lawn replacement in Melbourne.
